Item Noise Reduction & Segmentation in Ultrasound Images of CCA & IMT Measurement(2018-06-26T12:51:03Z) Gaurav KR, Gupta; Mohammed, Asif; Abhijnan, MitraUltrasound images of carotid artery are one of the parts that hard to identify by inexperienced doctor or radiologist because the shape is almost same like the muscle layer. Hence, the segmentation of carotid artery layer and measurement of the Intima Media Thickness (IMT) is proposed. The surface surrounding the carotid artery layers is considered as the Region of Interest (ROI) part and it is extracted using cropping the surface. The segmented carotid artery region consists of multiple noises. Among them the content of the speckle noise will be high. We use Speckle Removal Anisotropic Diffusion (SRAD) filter along with other filters for noise removal in the Ultrasound image and assess the performance of the filters. We use Otsu’s thresholding algorithm to segment the carotid artery from the background. After applying binarization technique and by performing morphological operations, the carotid artery region in the image is clearly visible, such that it is easy for us to measure the Intima Media Thickness (IMT). The Intima Media Thickness range is measured for both the upper and lower part of the image, forming the Upper Intima Media Thickness and Lower Intima Media Thickness. The results will help the doctors and radiologist for further diagnosis.
