Item Design and Development of a Frictionless Eddy Current Braking System(NHCE, 2026) Kaushal Arul -1NH22ME030 J Sujay-1NH22ME026Most conventional braking systems operate on the principle of friction, where kinetic energy is converted into heat to reduce speed. Although effective, friction-based braking systems suffer from drawbacks such as excessive heat generation, wear and tear, noise, and frequent maintenance requirements. To overcome these limitations, this project focuses on the design and development of a frictionless eddy current braking system. In this system, braking is achieved without any physical contact by using electromagnetic induction. When a conductive aluminum disc rotates in the presence of a magnetic field produced by permanent magnets, eddy currents are induced within the disc. These currents generate an opposing magnetic force that slows down the rotation smoothly. The system was designed, fabricated, and experimentally tested using a 12V DC motor and an adjustable air-gap mechanism.
