Influence of combined grain refinement and modification on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-12Si, Al-12Si-4.5Cu alloys

The effect of copper additions (4.5 wt%) on Al-12Si alloy was studied. Al-12Si with and without copper additions were grain refined and modified. A detailed microstructural and mechanical property were evaluated. Grain refinement and modification on Al-12Si, Al-12Si-4.5Cu alloys were carried out by the addition of 1 wt% of Al-1Ti-3B and 0.2 wt% of Al-10Sr, respectively. The results clearly demonstrated that significant refinement of α-Al was observed due to Al-1Ti-3B additions. Similarly, an Al-10Sr addition was responsible for the modification of Si particles. These structural changes were responsible for improved hardness and tensile properties. Moreover, the addition of 4.5 wt % Cu to Al-12Si alloy also showed improved properties. The best mechanical properties were achieved after combined addition of Al-1Ti-3B and Al-10Sr to Al-12Si-4.5Cu alloy.
