    A Novel Fault Tolerant Solution for Underground Transmission System Monitored by GSM

    With the advancement of technology and beautification of the developing countries, India is now advancing towards adapting the underground system of cables or transmission lines to transfer power from the power station to the required places and equipments. With the advancing of technology comes new problems which need solutions. The underground cable system can be more efficient than the over head transmission lines. however, other than the external faults there can be faults that can arise in the cables due to certain issues which will be discussed further in the report. Tolerating fault that occurs above the ground is easy as it is visible to the naked eye but that is not the case when it comes to analysing the fault that occurs below the ground. They need to be dug through in places that seem to be faulty and that assumptions may not always be right. To solve this issue we have designed an underground fault detection system that will take signals from the sensors attached at a specific distance on the cables which is then connected to the relays. The relays will pick up the high surge in either voltage or current and then send the relay impulses to the Arduino which is already fed with a code that will assist in calculating the accurate distance of the fault from the base station and inmate the operators. This will save time and allow uninterrupted flow of power to the required places. This project is designed keeping in mind the concept of smart engineering where we are not going to be using a lot of expensive components rather we are working with minimal to provide the maximum result as it can be made available for a lesser cost and be accurate which will also help in sales. To the Arduino we will be attaching a GSM module in the next phase will allow us to get the SMS of the location of the fault which will be sent directly through the Arduino. The underground fault tolerant system will help in minimising the time taken for maintenance and also it will be easy to operate making it non dependable as anyone with basic knowledge can use it and fix the problem without any delay.
