Item Analysis and Design of 40mld Sewage Treatment Plant Based on Sequencing Batch Reactor Process Technology(2019-06-18T11:18:36Z) KAVYA, SHREE; ASHWINI, J; CHAITHRA, K; HEMALATHA, RBengaluru's original sewerage system was built in 1922, a time when the city was much smaller than it is today; the original system served only the heart of the city. In 1950, with the city greatly expanding, a project was initiated to greatly expand the sewerage system. After the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWS&SB) was formed in the 1960s, programs were again implemented to expand the system to unsewered areas. Bengaluru‟s growth has been phenomenal. During the last two decades the city of Bengaluru has been experiencing unprecedented growth in the field of Industrial, Commercial and Institutional sectors. This phenomenal growth has resulted in unplanned urban activities surrounding Bengaluru and increase in population and construction activities. As per the census the population of Bengaluru city was 4.08 million in 1991, 5.8 million in 2001, 8.5 million in 2011 and increased to 11.5 million in 2016. This fast growth in population is posing tremendous pressure on infrastructure especially on water supply and underground drainage system. Bengaluru‟s rapid urbanization has also meant growing mountains of waste – solid and liquid. It is estimated that roughly 1,400 MLD of wastewater flows through its three valleys– the Vrishabhavathi , the Koramangala - Challaghatta, and the Hebbal. Sewerage flow in the city follows the regional topography and flow down along the three principal valleys and five minor valleys ensuring free flow of sewerage without any major pumping requirement. BWSSB is now proposed to construct 6 new treatment plants of total capacity of 520 MLD for treating the additional wastewater generated. The total cost of the scheme is Rs.1373.42 Crores. Seismic codes are unique to a particular region or Country. They take into the account the local seismology, accepted level of seismic risk, properties of available materials, methods used in the field of earthquake engineering and property. Most of the recommendations of IS codes are based on observations during past earthquakes as well as experimental and analytical studies made by scientists, engineers and seismologists. In India, the 1st seismic code namely IS 1893 was published in 1962. Seismic analysis and design for this project will be in compliance with IS 456/IS 1893, The concept of earthquake resistant design is that the building should be designed to resist the forces which arises due to design basis earthquakes, with only minor damages and the forces, which arises due to maximum considered earthquakes with some accepted structural damages but no collapse. The design philosophy was established considering the following aspects: The structure should withstand the moderate earthquakes, which may be expected to occur during the service life of structure with damage within acceptable limits. Such earthquakes are characterized as design basis earthquakes. The structure should not collapse when subjected to severe ground motion that could possibly occur at the field. Such earthquake is characterized as maximum considered earthquakes. Buildings are designed as per Design based earthquake, but the actual forces acting on the structure is more than the design earthquake. So, in higher seismic zones Ductility based design approach is preferred as ductility of the structure narrows the gap. In the present study a continuous attempt has been made in understanding how the toll booth works, which is being designed on queuing theory. The study involves collecting the geometric attributes of the toll plaza, the arrival pattern of vehicles to the queuing area, the service provided by the system.Item Applications of Geosynthetics in Highway Pavement(2019-06-19T10:40:35Z) JAVED, ALI; RAJ, DOMADIYA; AKHILESH, SHETKAR; MOHAN, NAIKWeak subgrades are a common problem in road construction. Whether it is a temporary access road or a permanent road built over a weak subgrade, a large deformation of the subgrade can lead to deterioration of the paved or unpaved surface. Ground movements caused by swelling /shrinkage of expansive clays poses a threat to any structure resting on such clays. The performance of paved and unpaved road pavements constructed over such expansive soil subgrades is often poor and shows cracking, rutting and differential settlements/ heaving at various locations. Geosynthetics help to distribute the loads more efficiently and increase the effective bearing capacity of the subgrade, hence providing a better alternative to costly conventional stabilization methods. In this study an attempt has been made to stabilize the soil by introducing a single layer biaxial geogrid. Geogrid has been placed in different location and CBR test was carried out to analyze the effect of reinforcing layer and its position on CBR value of the soil. The obtained results showed that there was an increase in CBR with the introduction of geo grid reinforcement in layers and optimum position obtained from the study. Present study is carried out to assess potential groundwater zone and to identify groundwater potential sites in the Lower Arkavathy-2 watershed, Bengaluru Urban District of Karnataka State due to acute shortage of potable water, using Remote Sensing (RS), Geographical Information System (GIS), Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) technique and Weightage Sum Raster Overlay Analysis (WSROA) technique. In this study different thematic layers were prepared viz. drainage, lineament, geology, geomorphology, soil texture, soil depth, land use/land cover, rainfall and slope for identification of groundwater potential zones and potential groundwater recharge sites, which are generated in the RS and GIS environment. The relative weights were assigned to different thematic layers using Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP). While determining the weightage of the various parameters, expert opinions were taken and the artificial groundwater potential zones and suitable sites for groundwater recharge were deduced. In the present study, five categories of groundwater potential zones were identified viz. very poor, poor, moderate, good and very good according to their suitability of area for groundwater recharge purposes.Item Assessment of Solid Waste Management of Mahadevapura Zone in Bangalore City and Improvement Techniques for Waste Disposal(2020-09-22T10:32:04Z) PRATHIK, POOJARI; THANSEEH AYOOB, PK; VACHANRAJ, R; YADUL, NMunicipal Solid Waste (MSW) management is one of the vital issues in the contemporary urban environment, more particularly in developing countries. The Bangalore metropolitan (BBMP) area covers an area of 1258 sq km and with a population of about 9.0 million generates around 5000 MT/day of municipal solid waste (MSW) at an average of 0.27 kg/day/per capitaPresently, Bangalore city faced with the problems with such high quantities of solid waste continuously and it is planning to upgrade its management system. The major issues in Bangalore city is open dumping without a liner and without a leachate management facility. The threat of ground water pollution, as well as saturation of an existing landfill site are the most pressing problems for the city today and the basic. Developing countries usually focus on disposal of waste and the most common way is landfill. While the quantity of water available is restricted in certain areas, wherever the water is available, its quality is making it un useable. Therefore, both quantity and quality of water are important while considering the availability of water resources in Bengaluru. The water requirement for domestic, industrial and other uses in cities and towns is difficult to meet at all times. While the major cities are being supplies water from surface water sources, the town and the villages in the maidan region are exclusively dependent on the ground and surface water for their domestic requirement. Even in places where the surface water is provided for drinking water purposes, partially ground water resources are tapped for domestic requirement in these cities and towns. It is further facilitated by addition ofinoculum i.e. sewage sludge. The wastes produced in the college premises is dumped which is not utilized and proves to be a nuisance to the environment. Soil particles carry more than 90 percent of the organic nitrogen and phosphorus originating from upland agricultural practices (Wilkin and Hebel, 1982). Sediments come from all over the land and thus have nonpoint sources, whereas nutrients can have both nonpoint and point sources. In a typical watershed, nutrients may come from sewage, wastewater, agricultural and urban runoff, and atmospheric fallout. In recent years, heavy use of fertilizers and pesticides and high rates of soil erosion have increased the severity of the problem. High concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus are the main causes of algal growth, which results in the deterioration of the lake water quality. Algae have a very high growth potential, many times more than any land-based plant system, and respond quickly to nutrient inputs which act as fertilizers. Water pollution has been a major issue as water forms an important component of our day-to-day activity. Excess nutrients either from sewage discharge, industrial discharge or agricultural runoff add to the imbalance in the dynamics of water quality. A case study involving construction of G+1 quarters at two areas in Bangalore namely (Police quarters, Adugodi) and (Fire Officers Quarters, Rajajinagar) has been undertaken for studying the construction process using bau panel technology and to compare its cost with conventional construction technique. The reinforcement concrete shear wall is the most reliable method of construction of shear wall which make the structure resistant against lateral forces, as it imparts stiffness to the structure and provides enough strength which minimises the damages caused by the earthquake. In this paper three models are analysed one without shear wall and two with shear wall at different location, one at the corner and one with shear wall at the faces and core of the building through STAAD Pro. Equivalent static method is used for software validation and response spectrum method is used for comparison of three models
