Abstract
SANSERA Engineering was established in the year 1987. It is a company engaged 111 the manufacture of precision machined components & machine tools like Rocker arm ,Gear Shifter Forks, Connecting Rods etc .. The project is based on the manufacture of the gear shifter fork. The gear shifter fork is an engine component that helps in synchronization and thus plays an important role in the engine transmission. The shift forks are connected to shift rails by pin joint and these shifter rails are operated by the lever controlled by the driver. In a constant mesh gearbox, shifter forks move the synchronizers which engage the gears to the shafts they ride on. In the manufacturing of the gear shifter fork, an unnecessary operation called Pad Gap elimination is performed as to eliminate a Pad Gap that occurs at the pad face of the shifter fork. Here Pad Gap is nothing but the variation in the height between the main boss face and the pad face. The company employs 4 workers per flow line for performing the manual Pad Gap elimination. As most of the processes in the company are automated, the Pad Gap elimination process is an unnecessary wastage of time, money, men and material. So, the aim of the project is to investigate the reason for Pad Gap and its elimination. The first task of the project was to find, in which stage of manufacture, the Pad Gap is occurring. The reason for the Pad Gap can be the faulty design or in the fixture. So the work study was conducted in different stages of manufacture and trials are conducted after each stage of operation.
