Abstract
In this project, an experimental investigation was conducted to know the performance and emission characteristics of mahua oil biodiesel in a single cylinder diesel engine. This shows how an edible, abundantly available mahua oil is converted into a biodiesel by a process called transesterification and different properties of mahua bio diesel have been studied. This mahua oil bio diesel is blended with different proportions of diesel on a stationary single cylinder diesel engine, along with exhaust gas recirculation to observe emission and performance characteristics.
5% blend has the least emission of NOX and hydrocarbon comparatively to other blends and diesel
10% blend is found to be giving the best thermal efficiency.
15% blend produced more brake power at higher loads.
The specific fuel consumption for 10% blend was found to be the least at 100% EGR.
Normalising all the properties, the 10% blend and 100% EGR combination was giving the satisfactory performance characteristics.
