Abstract
A Pin-Fin is an important element of a thermal system. It helps in the dissipation of the heat produced. The design of pin fin plays an important role in determining the effectiveness of the system. The objective of this study is to design a Pin-fin of a particular geometry with Aluminium alloy material particularly for aerospace application and complete the analysis and optimisation of the pin fin using Taguchi method, which is a statistical method to improve the process parameters considered. Taguchi method is found to be most effective compared to the other available methods as it reduces the number of iterations to be performed. Further, the orthogonal array is employed to study the various iteration of the performance characteristics. The factors considered are Base Plate Thickness, Fin Height, Fin Width and Fin Spacing. Accordingly a suitable orthogonal array is selected and analysis is performed on ANSYS 16.2 Workbench under Steady State conditions. With the help of the obtained graphs and the temperature difference between the base and the tip of the fin, the various iterative experiments are compared to find the most optimised design
