Abstract
Swing bridges are a type of movable bridge that rotate around a central point to allow vessels to pass through while maintaining the flow of road traffic. Unlike lift or bascule bridges, which raise or tilt, rotary swing bridges pivot horizontally to open and close, providing a compact solution for locations with limited space. These bridges are particularly useful in areas where waterways need to accommodate large vessels without disrupting road traffic for extended periods. This project focuses on the design, function, and applications of rotary swing bridges, examining the mechanical and structural systems that enable their rotation. Key components of the bridge include a central pivot, support bearings, and a power system, which can be operated through hydraulic, electric, or mechanical means. The project explores the challenges involved in the design of these bridges, including the durability of rotating components, the safety protocols for both pedestrians and vehicles, and the control systems required for efficient operation.
