| dc.description.abstract | A Phantom load or vampire load refers to electricity consumed by an electronic device while it is turned off or in standby mode some devices use it to provide useful feature like faster starting of device when switched or sensing signal for example TV looking for remote signal etc. for some devices it may not provide any useful feature for example adapters consuming power. In the past standby power was largely a non-issue for users, electricity providers, manufacturers, and government regulators. In the first decade of twenty first century awareness of the issue grew and it became an important consideration for all the parties. Up to the middle of the decade standby power was often several watts or even tens of watts per appliance .by 2010 regulations were in place in most developed countries restricting standby power of devices sold to one watt (and half that from 2013). For any single appliance the phantom load is never that large (the most inefficient designs draw 15-20 watts) however when factored over all of the appliances in a country like the U.S. the load can come to billions of watts. | en_US |
