Abstract
A railgun, also known as an Electromagnetic Rail Launcher, launches a projectile via the application of electromagnetic force, resulting in the projectile being launched with an extremely high velocity. Instead of utilizing chemical explosives to propel the projectile, the electromagnetic rail launcher creates a Lorentz force through the passage of high-current pulse through two parallel rails and the armature. This method allows for quick acceleration to high speeds, without needing explosive propellants. The railgun also offers many advantages, including faster projectile speeds, lower logistics burden of explosives, and longer distances and better accuracy. Although several technical hurdles exist, such as the need to find solutions for power supply and barrel wear, recent advancements in material sciences and pulsed power systems will progressively assist in achieving the final technical barriers to the practical implementation of railguns in future armies and space launch systems.
