Abstract
Welding of dissimilar metals is a challenging task. The main challenge when joining
dissimilar metals is the metallurgical incompatibility of the metals used. Due to this reason, it
has been very difficult to produce reliable joints between Titanium and Stainless steel metals
due to formation of cracks, brittle intermetallics and low strength of the joint. Hence Electron
beam welding experiments were carried out with copper as an interlayer by varying weld
parameters such as Accelerating voltage, Beam current, Welding speed and Gun to
Workpiece distance (GTWD). Optimization of these weld parameters is done as per Taguchi
methodology. Macrostructure of the joint are examined by visual inspection, helium leak
detection and optical microscopy. Microstructures of the joint are examined by Scanning
electron microscope. The results showed that the weld quality is satisfactory and crack free
weld joints were obtained with a good depth of penetration. Analysis of variance concluded
that Welding speed plays a major role in determining the DOP, followed by Accelerating
voltage, Beam current and GTWD. Nominal the better S/N ratio method has been followed in
this experiment to conclude the optimum value of parameters that reduces the effect of noise
factors on the weld quality.
