Abstract
The Indian banking landscape has historically been fragmented, with a mix of public sector banks (PSBs), private sector banks, and cooperative institutions. Over time, the government and regulatory bodies such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have supported consolidation to create fewer but stronger financial entities capable of supporting a growing economy. The 2019 mega-merger of ten public sector banks into four, along with the earlier mergers of State Bank of India (SBI) with its associate banks, and the acquisition of ING Vysya Bank by Kotak Mahindra Bank, are some landmark cases that exemplify this trend.
