Abstract
A new generation equipment has to be better in performance with respect to the previous generation, such as higher in efficiency, low power consumption, small in dimensions, lightless
and so on. At the same time focusing on low maintenance cost. When it comes to the motor, these can be achieved by the “Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motor or permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM)”.Employed even more from the last few years in many types of equipment in various application fields. We designed and built a control system that controls the motor speed for given reference input or set point. Our proposed project involves both openloop
and closed-loop technique, for controlling the speed of the BLDC motor. Closed-loop
control technique is designed and implemented using a “MATLAB Simulink with PID” for the
precisely controlled output. Similarly, open-loop control technique is designed and implemented on a “Spartan-6 Xilinx FPGA” kit with RPM measurement of the motor.
Our designed MATLAB Simulink involves PID controller, H-bridge inverter, Hall-effect
sensor and Back-EMF generator for switching inverter circuit. For a given reference input, the precise pair of motor windings are energized and RPM is measured, a feedback is given to the
PID for controlling of the output, for the given reference input.
In Spartan 6 FPGA kit PWM signal is generated in order to vary the motor output, by varying
the duty cycle of the PWM signal. An ESC is responsible for the proper switching of the
MOSFET’s with respect to the previous motor winding current. RPM is measured by sensing the motor rotation with the help of IR sensor.
