Abstract
For any fire to be sustained there are three primary components that need to be maintained: fuel,
heat and oxygen. If any of these components are missing, the fire will diminish and eventually
extinguish. While heat and oxygen are straightforward elements, fuel can exist in various forms
and depending the material’s state and composition (e.g., wood, petrol, propane, lithium etc.).
Depending on the material, fires are categorized into 6 classes (Class A through F), and each
class requires a different type of fire extinguisher or a combination of multiple fire retardants.
