Abstract
With advent of housing developments, the canals were encroached upon and became drains. Lakes were filled up and became housing layouts. The drains were used as dumping ground for construction debris and solid waste from the housing areas. Canal systems which used to function very well transferring excess water downstream got interrupted and many low-lying areas got submerged even with a small flood. Thus, the rehabilitation of existing drains has assumed significance. The project identifies the deficiencies in the existing Storm water drains and also the measures to correct them. The entire catchment area is divided into sub catchments that form the designated units for data collection. The redesign of storm water drains is based on the principles of hydraulics to meet the required capacities, which is technically, economically, socially, legally and environmentally feasible.
